SAN FRANCISCO - Nvidia says they lead a team formed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to create a chip that makes a super computer. For this project they get funds amounting to USD25 million.

Nvidia team together several DARPA scientists aimed to create a thousand times more powerful supercomputers with technology from graphics processing units (GPU) which is used to present more realistic video games.

"Nvidia admitted that this is a big investment in the field of parallel processing GPU, and highlights the position of the computer as one of the most promising way to exascale computing," said Nvidia's chief scientist Bill Bill Dally, as quoted by AFP on Wednesday (08/11/2010).

"We look forward to working together to develop a scalable system that does not cost too much but it gives more performance improvement for the supercomputer," he added.
