At long last and after heavy debate on both sides, the “.xxx” top-level domain has been formally and officially approved.
The idea is that the .xxx would replace the .com suffix for sites that register these domains — so you’d visit majorpornoperation.xxx instead of majorpornoperation . com. Existing .com domains would remain in place.
Any adult reader of this column should understand what it is that .xxx is designed for: pornography.
In theory it’s a win all around, especially since .xxx would make it much easier to filter pornography from kids’ computers and from workplaces, which are desperately worried about liability issues. Rather than having to scan domain names for thousands of naughty keywords and filter content of pages that are served, only one rule would have to be adopted: Don’t load anything that ends in .xxx.
But in reality, the concerns about how .xxx would work in the real world are quite great: Some feel that creating a .xxx suffix will do nothing to compartmentalize pornography but will only expand it and make it easier to find. While finding porn is certainly a trivial task today, with .xxx it should actually become even simpler.
Many unsophisticated users may also wrongly assume that filtering out .xxx is all it takes to be rid of porn from their child’s machine. Talk about a rude awakening one day.
