Earlier this week, WordPress suffered from the largest Denial of Service Attack in history, which originated in China and was likely politically motivated.
TechCrunch, which is hosted by WordPress, said it first thought the DDoS attack was from the Middle East, considering the recent issues with the Internet in the region. However, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg said an overwhelming majority of the attacks came from China, and he said from the looks of it, there were political reasons.
"WordPress.com was hit with another wave of attacks today (the fourth in two days) that caused issues again," he said. "This time we were able to recover more quickly, and also determined one of the targets to be a Chinese-language site which appears to be also blocked on Baidu [China's largest search engine]. The vast majority of the attacks were coming from China (98%) with a little bit of Japan and Korea Mixed in.
Mullenweg said that WordPress is accustomed to dealing with DDoS attacks, but most of the time they go unnoticed. WordPress has data centers in San Antonio, Chicago, and Dallas that usually squash threats pretty quickly. However, all three data centers fell victim to these recent attacks.
